The truth about supermarkets and department stores and their plans for world domination?

Dollar Greed Barcode 450x337 The truth about supermarkets and department stores and their plans for world domination?Let me start by telling you exactly how I feel about big supermarkets and department stores like Coles, Safeway, Target and K-mart to name a few local chains here in Australia. When you shop at one of these stores, you are doing nothing less than spitting in the face of freedom. And don’t think that I am over reacting. For years these companies have been using their warmonger tactics to take over and destroy competition from smaller, independent retailers. And in the name of convenience we have allowed this to happen.

There is another term that can be used to describe those who look for the convenient option regardless of the outcome. Lazy! And if you’re sitting there thinking “but what is wrong with supermarkets and department stores?” you can throw in the terms ignorant and naive too.

Since the birth of these abominations, it has been their one goal to take over and be the one source of all products, no matter what the cost to us, our culture, society and environment. The first stage was to establish themselves as a place of connivence, where you could go to get many products under the one roof, instead of having to walk up and down a street of individual shops. They succeeded. And for someone like me who hates shopping, they are convenient.

The next stage was to eradicate all competition by using unfair trade tactics and providing products direct to the public, at prices much lower than the competition could possibly provide. In many cases, they sell their products even cheaper than what the competitions wholesale price is. Once again they have succeeded. Unless you live in a country town or a suburb that has resisted the propaganda (and there are a few remaining), independent grocery stores, toy shops, fruit & vegetable shops, bottle shops, bakeries, butchers and many more, are becoming casualties of the war and having to close up shop. They just can’t compete.

This is about where they are up to in their world domination plans. The next stage, which they are beginning to implement in certain areas now, is to start jacking up the prices to increase profit margins. They can do it because there are no longer any threats of competition, other than different chains of supermarket and department stores who are up to the same tricks. But they don’t want to totally alienate us, the customers, so they’ll do it slowly at first so you don’t realise. They also do it along with perceived bonuses so that you don’t mind paying extra. Let me give you an example.

Say for instance that baby spinach leaves were being sold for $4.50 per Kilogram. Yes, I know that’s a lot of spinach leaves, but I must stay strong cause I loves me Olive Oyl… Ok enough of the bad jokes…

I doubt there are many people who actually buy baby spinach leaves by the kilo. You probably get more like 100 to 200 grams at a time and only spend fifty cents to a dollar. The supermarketing geniuses took note of what the average amount being purchased was and decided to offer the spinach leaves in pre-package amounts of 200 grams instead of the loose leaf we’ve all been used to. They then sell the pre-packaged 200 grams of baby spinach for the same price you could get a kilo of the loose leaf. We as consumers are so used to seeing the price of $4.50 a kilo but then associating that price with the amount that we actually purchase of only 200 grams, suddenly seeing the 200 grams now priced at $4.50 doesn’t raise any alarm bells.

Their deception doesn’t stop there. The now pre-packaged spinach leaves are wrapped in a glossy plastic which gives the green leaves a sense of being more vibrant, lush and fresh than the loose leaves. They are doing a similar thing with computer monitors these days too. They use a glossy screen to give the image a much richer and more vibrant look than the traditional matte finishes, even though the image being sent to the monitor is exactly the same.

For one last push to get you to spend more on the spinach for less of it, they now put the nice new glossy pack up at the natural eye level under bright lights that, again add to the freshness look. The loose leaf spinach is usually kept in a cardboard box on the bottom shelf away from the lights so that it doesn’t look as appealing. By this stage, most people have made the transition to paying five times the amount they previously were without even realising it.

Of course the actual prices are going to vary from place to place and shop to shop. I only used these prices as an example of what is going on. Which brings me to a side note… Did you know that if you went to ten supermarkets on any given day and looked up the price of the same items in each, the price would vary depending on the area. The supermarkets that still have competition they are trying to eliminate, keep their prices low while the ones where the competition has been slaughtered, are able to increase the prices for greater profit. They of course rely on your habits of convenience, in a hope that you don’t venture too far from your local stores and become aware of the price variances.

The next thing they’ll do, is get you to pay for things that have previously been considered part of normal running costs and built into the pricing of their products. For instance shopping bags and shopping trollies.

Currently I’m unaware of any shop that actually charges for the use of their trollies (other than the airports). However, have you noticed them preparing you for the idea? Almost all supermarkets and department stores in the Melbourne area, make you put a one or two dollar coin into the trolley to release it from the trolley bay. You then get the coin returned when you return the trolley. This is one of many ways these shops work to externalise their costs. Instead of employing someone to collect trollies from the car park, they now motivate you to do the job for them and for nothing. I would bet that this is a precursor to them actually charging for the use of these trollies. Of course this won’t happen until we have all been trained to return the trollies ourselves and do it naturally.

Then there is the debate of plastic bags. A number of supermarkets and department stores around the country are conducting trials, charging for standard plastic carrier bags. Now I don’t know who started this one, but the supermarkets and department stores have certainly taken the opportunity to profit. I have a feeling that it began  when the environmentalists kicked up a stink about the adverse effects, plastic bags have on the environment. I’m not going to get into the environmental debate here, but instead of doing the right thing and swapping over to biodegradable bags and being done with the issue, the supermarkets and department stores came up with the ingenious idea to charge the customer to have a plastic bag instead. Not much, just the small fee of around ten cents per bag.

Ten cents… Not much at all really, until you realise that 500 billion to a trillion plastic bags are used each year worldwide. I had a look around and found that I could order biodegradable bags for as low as two cents a bag. I’m sure when the supermarkets and department stores place orders in the millions, they can get them a hell of a lot cheaper than that. If they all started charging their ten cents a bag, that would put at least $40 billion in their pockets. The supermarkets and department stores claim that this is to deter us from using plastic bags so that the environment benefits. Not a bad profit for helping the environment.

If they truly cared about the environment, there is a lot more they could do to solve the problem. It is at this point that I must applaud one department store that seems to be doing the right thing on this issue. Bunnings, a giant hardware store (mind you, this is a hardware store that destroyed all the independent competition in the country, so I can’t applaud them too much), has stopped using plastic bags altogether. Instead they offer cardboard boxes for free. Basically all of the boxes that their stock arrives in, is placed in a holding cage near the exit for customers to use. Not once have I seen boxes available as an option in the majority of other supermarkets and department stores.

So you see, supermarkets and department stores have destroyed all competition and in doing so, have taken our freedom to choose where to shop. In the past if we did not like the service we were getting or the prices being charged or even the smell of the cashier, we could choose not to spend our money at that store and find another one with service, prices or the odor of a cashier that was more to our individual liking. That freedom is gone. We can choose not to shop at theses supermarkets or department stores, but for many items, they are just no longer available anywhere else. Without the freedom to go elsewhere, we no longer have the power to protest the things we don’t like. If we get bad service at one supermarket chain our only choice is to choose a different chain with equally bad service.

I’m not entirely sure what the solution is and fear that these Goliath’s have established too strong a foothold within our communities to be removed. I do however do my bit as an army of one. If a store is charging for bags, I’ll fill a trolley up with items go to the check out, let them scan all of the items and then when they ask if I want to purchase bags I’ll look disgusted at the idea and tell them if they charge me for the bags they’ll loose the sale. Occasionally they have given me the bags to avoid a “scene”. When the don’t relent, I walk away and leave them to clean up and put all the products back. This has cost the store a lot more than the three or four bags would have.

Whenever I need a trolley, I walk up to the help desk and tell them that I need a trolley to do my shopping but don’t have any coins. They then use a special tool to release the trolley for me. No coins required. I’ll then leave the trolley where I park so that a trolley retrievalist can have the job of collecting it.

If there is a choice of packeted vegetables as well as loose ones, I’ll pick the packeted version and then take them out of the packet. This way I get it at the loose price. I’ll leave the packet on the shelf in plain sight, so they know they have been beaten at their own game.

I know these things can appear petty and pointless, but what else can be done? Of course, wherever it is still possible, make the choice to shop at the last remaining independent stores. I am lucky in that there are still have a couple of independent butchers nearby. By shopping there, not only am I fighting against the supermarkets, but the real butcher has far greater range at much better quality. By putting in that extra little bit of effort to go to a separate shop, both myself and the community are benefitting. Imagine if we all acted this way. The supermarkets and department stores would bow to our pressure when it is costing them their precious profits. And that’s the way it should be.

Don’t get me wrong. I believe there is a place in our communities for supermarkets and department stores. They help to serve the masses in ways that small independent shops would become overwhelmed. I just wish they’d play nice, and understand that there is also a place in our communities for the small independent stores. There is plenty of room in the marketplace for both to operate. It is greed that has driven the supermarkets and department stores to crush the independent retail outlets. I’d love to hear any suggestions and solutions you may have, or ways in which you are protesting. Just leave a them in a comment below.

Photo Friday – The Fairy Mill. The woods are alive with magic.

Friday, September 25th, 2009

The Fairy MillI thought that this week I’d skip ahead a bit and write about one of my more recent images ‘The Fairy Mill’. But to do so I have to go back a bit first.

About five years ago, I found out about a group called the National Association of Photoshop Professionals or NAPP. They were responsible for publishing the ‘Photoshop User’ magazine. I had received a sample magazine and found it very educational. The tutorials and ‘how to’s’ were really well put togethre, so I decided to join up.

The magazine and online video tutorials were fantastic and I learned a lot quickly, but the best part of the membership was the community forums. It didn’t matter how stupid a question may seem, there was always someone who could help out without calling you and idiot for asking (unlike some other forums I had visited.)

One of the cool things the forum moderators started up was a weekly Photoshop battle. Each week, one of the moderators would post an image from the Stock Xchang website and it was our mission to create something special out of it. Sometimes there were strict guidelines to try and follow but mainly it was freeform. No prizes, no winners or losers, just a desire from all who participated to create the best work they could. It was a lot of fun, and pushed all of us creatively.

Over the years, life got busier and busier and I found little time to be a part of the community but always stayed a member and dropped by from time to time to see what was going on. A few weeks ago when I dropped in, I saw a battle image that just called out to me. I couldn’t resist, I had to do it.

I downloaded the image of the forest and started to work on it. I knew I needed a fairy to put in it so I began scouring another website, Deviant Art, for a stock image I could use. After searching through hundreds of shots, I found it. A stunning girl, posed in a light, summery, turquoise dress provided by Ranger Cookies Stock. I started putting the image together.

I have always had a love and fascination of the mystical and enchanted. Faeries, goblins, trolls, pixies and enchanted, magical forests. I love finding real locations that could be magical forests and photographing them to composite in the magical creatures. I’m even developing a children’s TV show that is set in an enchanted forest. It’s something that always brings me back to my childhood, how I used to have adventures running around, exploring the countryside in England.

I composited the image together, hand painting many of the lights and fairy dust elements. I played with the idea of putting a second fairy sitting on the mossy rock but it all started to look a little too cluttered. I finished it off and uploaded it to the forum. It felt good to be doing this again after so long away. I think I’ll have to do more again soon.

I thought the image turned out pretty good but I couldn’t help but feel that it was a shame it was made out of stock images rather than ones I had taken myself. I have hundreds of great landscape shots that would work perfectly for this type of image but I’ve never really gotten into photographing people. Maybe I’ll have to try doing a proper studio shoot with a model sometime.

If you or somebody you know feels like being turned into a mythical creature, please get in touch and we’ll organise a photo shoot. You can purchase prints of The Fairy Mill as well as other artwork I have created at RedBubble.com.

Why so bland? Have we lost our soul in the naughties?

Friday, September 25th, 2009

19 imagination 450x199 Why so bland? Have we lost our soul in the naughties?

It seems that every era before now, has had its own unique sense of style, creativity and originality. In art and design, the way we dress, the music we listen to and pretty much everything else. As time has progressed the eras of style have become shorter and shorter. For the last century, each era of style has averaged only a decade in length. The 1950’s were different to the sixties which were different to the 70’s and so on. And let’s not even talk about what went wrong with the style in the 80’s (at least it was original.) The fact is that each of these era’s of style have had their own unique look, feel and sound, that are very identifiable as belonging to that particular era.

So what has gone wrong in the naughties, this first decade of the new millennium?

It seems today that everywhere you look there are old styles being rehashed. People are wearing a mix of clothes that are based on styles from at least the last five eras, possibly more. It seems that every movie at the cinema and every song in the charts is a remake of an old one. There is very little that is new.

So where has all the originality gone? Everything has become so bland, as passion, creativity and originality, seem to be fading into obscurity.

Even food hasn’t escaped the nothingness that is consuming our culture. I can’t remember the last time I tasted real bread, made by a real baker. Most of the bakeries these days get their pre-mixed bags delivered so that all they have to do is add water and bake. Basically you’re getting the same bread at almost every bakery in the country.

The supermarkets all seem to stock the same stuff. Two minute noodles, microwave pizzas, cold meats… All of them designed to have just enough flavor to be edible to people with a palette for rich foods, while not offending those who actually enjoy blandness. Designed for the biggest consumer base, instead of really working to satisfy one niche group.

It seems we have left our identities, our passion, our very souls, way back in the twentieth century.

There is, of course, a reason that this has happened. And that is the pursuit of money. Greed to be more specific. Almost everything these days has become controlled by the banker’s, the corporate CEO’s, the lawyers and the accountants. The problem is that they are telling the creatives (the artists, designers, musicians, writers, architects, food creators, etc) what to do.

So why is this a bad thing? I’m the first to admit that us artistic types, can often achieve very little of use, when left to our own devices. It’s often a good thing to have someone to manage and give direction. The problem lies with the greed factor.

These corporatey types are so scared of not making money, or worse yet, loosing it, that they no longer want to take the risk of trying new things. They want to be assured of making a profit. So they look into the past to see what worked and then tell the creatives to remake it. Surely if it worked once it’ll work again.

The thing is, it usually does. There are new generations growing up, who were not around to see the clothes or hear the music or watch the film the first time it around. To them it is new and exciting.

So what then is the problem?

Well, if we continue down this path we could eventually, just breed the artisans out of our world. The creatives would be considered those who can take something old and repackage it. There will be no room for original, passionate, free thinking expression. As I’m sure Billy Connolly would put it “We’ll be living in a beige world.”

This is a world that I for one, have no desire to be part of. If I can end with one small bit of advise, or maybe a request, to all who may read this. Find your passion, express your thoughts, seek out originality and help keep our world, one of fresh, vibrant colours.

The meaning of life… I have found the answer to true enlightenment.

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

QuestionMark 241x300 The meaning of life... I have found the answer to true enlightenment. These days, there are a great many people out there who claim to have the answers we seek, to some of the biggest questions we all ask. Why are we here? Is there life out there in space? Is there a God? Does a red car really go faster? Religious leaders, scientists, new age spiritualists, all claim to have the answers to lead us into enlightenment. But do they really?

There is a saying that I use – “If you think you have found the answer, you’ve just given up looking!” In the past, I have claimed that I have found the meaning of life, something that most of us would love to know. Many people think that if you know the meaning of life, then you have the answers to everything. I wish this were so. The meaning of life, however, is just one tiny, little thing in a great, big, eternal universe. There is still infinite knowledge to learn.

I wish I had all the answers to all the questions so that I could share them with you, but I don’t. I doubt that I ever will, or even if anyone ever will. If we were to have infinite knowledge, would we not be God’s. I for one, am not a God, other than my own. I am merely a human that has been deposited on this planet we call home. Just like all other humans, I have my fair share of faults and probably misguided beliefs.  For instance I still believe that one day someone will invent a way to lose weight overnight without any effort.  Now tell me that’s not a misguided belief.  I am only telling you this so that you realise that these pages are filled with my opinions, my theories, my ideas and my beliefs. Therefore they are subject to any faults that I may have.

What I am trying to say is that they are not, set in stone, fact. Most of my beliefs are based on my observations and understanding of the world around me. Where I venture into the realms that currently are beyond what can be known, I try to analyse the information available, with logic and reason to come to my own conclusions. What I believe, is what seems right to me. However, I always open to the possibility that someone may come along and say “well did you think of it from this point of view” and completely change my ideas and ultimately my beliefs.

If I was to tell you my beliefs, would they then become your beliefs too? As much as my ego likes that idea, I really hope that they wouldn’t. If you see anything here and think ‘Hey, he’s gotta point’ or ‘You know he may just be right’, don’t just accept it as gospel because it is a logical and plausible point of view. Look into it, mount your own investigation on the subject, expand on my ideas and then share them, so that we all may grow. The more we question things and examine them, the deeper our understanding will become.

In an interview I did with a journalist about a screenplay I had written, I said ‘A great story isn’t just written. It is evolved!’. This applies to everything, not just works of fiction. Philosophy, knowledge, understanding, science, hot dogs… If they are great then they have been evolved from a simple beginning. Nothing just happens to be great. Ideas are exactly the same, they need to be evolved.

So what of these people that really do claim to be enlightened beings that have the answers?

A truly enlightened person would not have the arrogance to claim they know the answers. In an infinite universe, there is infinite knowledge. Human beings are just an infinitesimally small creature within it, that couldn’t even begin to scratch the surface of understanding all that there is. People may have ideas, theories or beliefs about what the answers to those big questions are, but the do not know as an absolute fact. They couldn’t possibly. Of course this doesn’t mean that their ideas are wrong.

So what then, do I believe the meaning of life is?

Well I believe it is simple. Anyone who says that it is something only few people are gifted enough to understand, are just trying to control you. Either that, or they are brainwashed and just repeating what their controller has said to them.  And now the moment of truth. The answer to the most commonly asked question by all humans.  What is the meaning of life?

To learn, experience and create!

What the…! The meaning of life can be summed up in five words? Yes, I believe it is that simple. People usually think that the more complicated something is, the more likely it is to be correct. The fact is that most of the things that seem to be complicated, really aren’t, it is just a matter of how you look at it.

Now if only we could learn to get along, so that we could experience each others kindness, rather than create weapons to destroy ourselves…

Anger issues? Free yourself from the burden of repression.

Monday, September 21st, 2009

Anger 450x293 Anger issues? Free yourself from the burden of repression.

There’s a lot of talk these days about anger, angry people and of course the buzzword “anger Issues”. It seems every day you turn on the TV there is another News report about someone loosing control and flying off the deep end. Why does this happen? Why does someone need to loose control in a fit of rage with violent, destructive and abusive results?

I understand anger and I understand rage. It’s something I’ve dealt with my whole life. When I was a child I had an extremely volatile temper which often resulted in screaming and slamming doors. Today it’s not something I am proud of, but at the time I didn’t know of any better way to deal with it and nor did any of the people around me.

Anger can be caused by a lot of things. Some are minor frustrations, while others stem much deeper into our psyches and are caused by things that can take a lifetime to uncover. Of course the ultimate way to free yourself from anger is to find the cause and heal it. That can be a lot harder than it seems, although is definitely a worthy cause.

But what about now? What can be done right now to deal with the anger? I for one, didn’t want to have those violent outbursts the whole time I was trying to figure out and heal what was causing them. After a series of particularly nasty outbursts back in high school, which resulted in school mates getting physically hurt, I decided something had to be done to take control.

For me, anger is a very physical emotion. When something irritates or frustrates me to the point of anger, I feel it in my stomach first. Like a boiling hot fluid that rises up through me, twisting and knotting my insides up. It can be such a build up of extreme energy that it just has to be let out some how.

The problem is that we are all told, from a young age, that anger is bad and we shouldn’t feel it. We are all told that we need to control it, and by “control” most people mean, force it down, bottle it up, hide it away and pretend you’re not angry at all. I don’t know what genius came up with that piece of wisdom, but I hope they suffered at the hands of an angry madman before dying.

Suppressing or bottling up any emotion is a bad idea. All that does is hold it in until the next dose comes along and then we hold that in too and the next one and the one after that… Then, when we are full to the brim with anger, someone may come along and do or say something that, any other time we’d dismiss, but because our anger bucket is full to busting, we explode into rage and everybody thinks we’re over-reacting to this one little thing, when in actual fact the rage is from the build up of everything.

So while I was still at school, I made a decision that would change my life for the better. It was a decision that was considered totally unacceptable within our societies structure, but I didn’t care. I decided to allow my anger it’s rightful place within my emotions. I let it out. Instead of letting it build up inside and then exploding out, whenever something irritated, frustrated or angered me, I spoke out about it right there and then. I let it be known that it irritated or frustrated or angered me. I vented.

As soon as I started doing this I felt an amazing sense of relief. To vent the anger at the moment it was created meant I was never hanging on to it. I found that to release the anger, all I had to do was verbalize it. Sometimes shout it, depending on the level of irritation. I have discovered over the years, that upon releasing the anger with each and every irritation, there is not one event that creates enough anger for me to have a physically violent reaction. No more slamming doors or punching walls or hurting other people or myself.

The best part is that the people who create the anger are the ones to receive the angry words, rather than the wrong people who don’t usually deserve it, like family or friends. This does a few different things. Firstly it tells the person straight away that they are doing something wrong to you and you wont tolerate it. More than likely they won’t do it again unless they are complete jerks. It also means that because you are not hanging onto the anger, you don’t build up a resentment about the person that caused it. This means that once the irritation has been vented, you can get on with your relationship with that person (whatever that relationship may be), or with whatever it was you were doing.

Of course there are also the health benefits of not holding onto the anger. I don’t know if there are any actually proven facts about this, but I would be very surprised if holding on to anger doesn’t have a negative effect on ones physical and mental health. I’m sure, in time, they will discover that many diseases, like cancer, may be caused by repressing emotions.

There are always going to be a lot of people in society who don’t get it, and tell you that anger is a bad thing and you just shouldn’t allow yourself to feel it. These are usually religious or spiritual people of some kind (the new age types are the worst for this.) It just isn’t realistic to expect someone to not feel anger if something is causing it. That kind of thinking just makes me angry… Arghhhhh!

Anger is not a bad thing. It is a valid emotion, just like happiness and love. We should never repress it, or any emotion. To do so, is to inevitably head for disaster. Let it out and free yourself from the burden. You may be surprised at how this one little step can affect your whole life in a positive way.

Now, who the hell do I yell at about having to pay these damn taxes….. ARRRRGGGHHHH!!!!

Photo Friday – Drowning Solitude. The apocalypse is upon us.

Drowning Solitude 450x323 Photo Friday Drowning Solitude. The apocalypse is upon us.

It’s photo friday again and this is one of my personal favorites. Drowning solitude. A small boat floats towards disaster as an apocalyptic sky threatens annihilation. There is so much going on with this image I almost don’t know where to start. I guess the beginning is a good a place as any.

Way back in 2006 I spent a day at Mount Dandenong, one of my favorite places around Melbourne. I went for a hike in the rain forest, taking lots of photos. Eventually I came to a clearing with a completely unobstructed view, looking towards Melbourne city about fifty kilometers away. Not thinking I would get a view like this, I hadn’t bought a telephoto lens with me. So I snapped a few wide shots off, thinking they wouldn’t turn out particularly good.

When I eventually saw the shots, I wasn’t very impressed. The city was too far off in the distance, and because it was an overcast day, the whole image was flat and lifeless. I filed it away, with no intention of using it for anything.

Weeks past and I managed to get some free time on my hands. I wanted to create something but wasn’t sure what. I started flicking through my photos to see if any of them would inspire me. Sure enough I came to that crappy photo of the view and instantly saw a vision of the apocalypse in my mind.

I’m sure that’ll come as no surprise to those who know me and are aware of my fascination (actually it’s probably more like an obsession) of the apocalypse. Something draws me to that genre and I don’t know what. I love the feeling of impending doom. The melancholy that comes after a civilization is lost. I even made a post-apocalyptic movie called Lost:Black Earth back in 2000.

I started to build the picture. I replaced the sky and created tornados, then flooded the whole area up to the city (sorry for those who live in Ferntree Gully. It was nothing personal…) The final addition was the boat. It just needed that little something for a focal point. I toned the whole image in a deep sepia to create the sense of menace and doom.

I couldn’t really tell you where the name came from. It just popped into my head and stuck. I often wonder if the boat is called ‘Solitude’ and it is about to be drowned. For someone who has deep thoughts, I rarely have them about my own artwork. For me creating art is all about feeling rather than thinking. I do what feels right even if it isn’t. And there is plenty that isn’t right with this image.

For instance, take a look at the water. It is so still and reflective. With such a storm thrashing above, I doubt that this is possible. Where is the reflection of the lightning in the water? The scale of the boat is all wrong. I’m sure there are other things that defy logic or reality too.

But I don’t care. All of these things were done the way they were because they felt right at the time and still do now. When the image was completed, I was stunned at how the photo that I thought was crap, had turned into something I was quite proud of.

It’s also interesting to note that this was a very early piece of art that I created before I knew how to use Adobe Photoshop particularly well. When I look at the project file now, I cringe at the terrible techniques I was using at the time. I guess this is proof that all that matters is the end product and not how you got to it.

You can purchase prints of Drowning Solitude as well as other artwork I have created at RedBubble.com.

I am my own God, therefore I am my own reality!

Friday, September 18th, 2009

Red&Blue_PillWhat kind of egotistical madman would even dare to type such stuff about him or herself?  Well madman I may be, but I am far from egotistical.  Yet why else could I be writing such a title?  The answer is simple.  When you read the title ‘I am my own God, therefore I am my own reality’, in your own mind, are you hearing it as your own voice, saying it as if it was yourself that had written it, or are you hearing a pseudo-voice saying it about me, the writer?  More than likely you are hearing the pseudo-voice saying that I, the writer, am my own God.  This, however, is not how I meant it to be heard.  This is something each of us should hear as if it were about our/yourselves.

Confused yet?

Ok. Let’s break it down. So what is reality? I know, i know… Some simple light thinking right there… The dictionary claims reality is the world or the state of things as they actually exist, as opposed to an idealistic or notional idea of them. Or the state or quality of having existence or substance.

So I guess the next question would be, what actually exists? This is where things start to get a little dicey. Does the screen you’re reading this on exist? How about the chair you are sitting in or the roof above your head? What about the people you’ve met and the relationships you’ve formed, do they exist? And what about you? I’m sure that most of you will concur that all of these things, including yourselves, do actually exist.

Ok, so what about some slightly more intangible things like, colour. Does red exist? How about turquoise? At first, I’m sure you want to say of course they do. But isn’t colour just a matter of perspective? Let’s take me for instance. I am colour blind. I can see all the colours and can point out the difference between red, green and blue. But I see them differently to anyone who is not colour blind. Although I can recognise and identify something that is red, I see it differently. Therefore is red part of reality when different people see it quite differently. To you, the red that you see is part of your reality, but to me, I will never see or experience red how you see it therefore it just isn’t part of my reality and vice versa.

So if I was to ask you how you felt about the colour red, what would you say? Do you like it, do you hate it, does it give you a warm fuzzy feeling inside? I, for one, am not a fan of red. I much prefer blue or green. I would even go as far as saying that I dislike the colour. In my reality red is a nasty colour. Yes that is opinion based on an emotional response, yet my opinion is part of my reality. If you like the colour red, then you’re reality is different to mine as you would perceive it as a positive colour.

Basically what I’m getting at is that reality is dependent on how things are received by our senses, interpreted by our mind and clouded by our emotions. One could say that reality is what is left once you’ve stripped away our emotions and our interpretations of our limited senses. Would there actually be anything there? We would never know because the only way we can know things are there, is by sensing them and then interpreting them… It is a vicious cycle.

If I could not see, how could I be sure that there were actually things to see?

So if so much of what we class as reality, is up for different interpretations, does that mean that reality itself is limited to the individual perceiving it? To take it a step further, if reality is a process of interpretation by the individual, then isn’t the individual responsible for creating his or her own reality?

Do you see where I’m going with this yet?

If you are the creator of your own reality, does that then make you, your own God?

So back to one of my early questions. Does the chair that you are sitting on really exist or is it just a creation of your own reality? If I was to tell you that the chair does not exist, are you now sitting on the floor of your imaginary house, looking up at a fake sky, wondering how you got into your own head and how the hell do you get out of it?

Friends for a day or navigating the end of a relationship.

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

two lovers kissing 217x300 Friends for a day or navigating the end of a relationship. After attacking the social network scene yesterday, I thought it may be a good time to talk about relationships between people. Now I’m not just talking about romantic relationships, but all kinds. The dictionary describes a relationship as the way in which two or more concepts, objects, or people are connected, or the state of being connected.

I believe a relationship can be as simple as striking up a conversation with someone in an elevator to pass the minute or two before the doors open, or as complex as a forty year long marriage. Of course not all relationships are meant to be long lasting, and that’s when they break down.

Each and every connection between people serves a purpose to both parties.  No one hangs out with someone just because. When there is no longer a reason to stay connected, each person continues on their own way and the relationship is over. It’s easy to understand and accept this with a short term relationship such as the elevator scenario but what about a longer lasting relationship such as a friendship.

Well it’s just as simple really. If you and your best friend, for example, are both getting something from the relationship, weather it be someone to confide in, or someone to go out and have fun with, or whatever the reason is that you are friends, then the relationship will last and thrive. But what if life takes you down one path and your friend down another? As you both have different experiences and learn and grow, you may find that you are becoming different people (of course you’ll probably think that it’s your friend who has changed and not you…) This is what is called growing apart and it can happen with any relationship, long or short.

I think a great many people feel that to grow apart is a bad thing, when actually it’s just a natural part of life. It really is almost impossibly difficult for two people to grow as human beings at the same rate and in the same way. If, for instance, you have a lot of life experiences, yet your friend rarely does anything new or different, you may find yourself feeling that you have outgrown him or her or vise-versa. Al of this is a natural part of having relationships.

The problems begin when you go against the natural way of things and try to force a relationship when it has actually reached it’s conclusion. For some reason people feel the need to hang on to things. Maybe it’s out of a fear of change or some other deep psychological reason. Married people, for instance, quite often try and force the relationship to stay together because of a sense of commitment. Let’s face it, they promised they would stay together when they got married.

Trying to force a relationship, when it’s not meant to be, can put an enormous strain on all involved. Things will start off small, maybe you start finding something that your friend does irritating, or you realise that there’s something you never really liked about your partner. Things can only escalate from there and it wont be long before everything about them starts to annoy you. Once this happen the relationship is in a very dangerous place. It can become volatile and explode at any minute. If this happens it usually irreparable.

And yet some people still try to force it to work. No amount of will power can make a relationship work once the reason for the relationship no longer exists. The relationship is over. If you still try and persist, the universe will eventually kick in to gear and throw something at you to guarantee separation. This is never usually a good thing and can come in many forms. Health issues, accidents, or any number of other so called random acts.

The key to having good relationships is to be able to recognise early on, the reason for the relationship. Why are you friends? Why are you lovers? What draws you to that person? Why are you connected? Answer this basic question and you can recognise when the relationship is coming to an end. Of course a relationship can grow and evolve too. When one reason for having a relationship is coming to an end, you may find another reason or you may be so connected that you have a number of reasons all at once. If two people can grow together and maintain a healthy relationship, it can be a wonderful thing.

I know with my relationships, I can usually recognise when they are coming to an end. When this happens I’ll begin to pull away from the other person. I’ve found this to be the least destructive way of ending a relationship. Basically just drifting apart and never trying to force it. A number of people and friends I have done this with, have actually returned to my life at a later date and a new relationship is developed, with a new reason for being. Of course this probably isn’t going to happen if you end the relationship on bad terms. If that’s the case, there’s a good chance you’ll end up hating each other and never reconcile.

In fact some of my closest friends today are friends I allowed to drift away in the past, now that we have reconnected, our relationships are deeper and stronger than ever. It’s amazing how ending a relationship on good terms can come back to reward you in the future.

Selling out to the social networks

1100s Buildings 450x337 Selling out to the social networks

So I had an interesting day today. I started off by reading my emails as usual and then decided to read an article I had downloaded a few days ago. It spoke of the importance of “social networking” in regards to getting visitors to come to a web site. Well seeing as this is a one week old web site and the visitors statistics are only in the low triple figures, I figured I’d give it a shot.

I had installed a plugin while setting up this site, that added the social networking links at the bottom of each page. I really had no idea what they were for other than I’d seen them on a heap of other blogs. So I set about clicking on the links and signing up to all the networks.

Holy smokes that was a bigger job than I thought. There was a whopping 22 of them, all of which needed me to go through the sign-up process. You see, I’ve avoided the whole “social networking” fad in a similar way that you might avoid coming into contact with the plague. Back in the real-world I’m not a big fan of socialising or networking. So up until now I couldn’t imagine why I would want ot do it online.

I’m more of a one on one kinda guy. I like to hang out with one friend at a time so that the time together is quality rather than shared and watered down. I’ve never been one for groups and I’ve always hated parties and big gatherings.

Alright damn it… I’m antisocial… There I admit it. In a world that pressure us all into being social beings and team players, I like to walk alone. A dangerous thing to admit, I’m sure. I can be genuinely happy and content in my own company with nothing more than my thoughts. In fact the idea of living alone in a lighthouse out at sea for six months, is quite appealing. (if anyone knows where I can apply for a lighthouse keeper job, please leave a comment with the details.)

But walking alone does not bring people to my web site. And no visitors, means no point to writing for it. So I’ve sold out completely and I feel a little dirtier because of it. I ended up spending the majority of the day signing up and submitting articles to these networks. I even started a Twitter account. Please have mercy on my soul (you know that thing I’m losing a little bit of each day…)

The worst part of it all is that after spending all day signing up to these 22 networks and feeling some sense of achievement, I did a quick search on Google only to find that Wikipedia has a list of 156 social networking websites…

Holy hell!!!

So what does all of this mean? I have no idea. I guess I just need to keep on playing the social game and see if it attracts people. You never know, I may end up becoming a twitter junkie with ten billion friends. Oh dear God, what if they want to meet me, you know, for real…

Photo Friday – J.O.T.T.P.O.I

Journey Of The Two Professors of Imaginality

I thought it’d be a good idea to have a regular segment to this blog and what better way to wrap up the week with looking at some artwork. Every Friday, I plan on examining one of my photographs or pieces of artwork and give some insight into my thought process, any inspiration or stories behind it and possibly a look at ways I went about creating it.

At first I was thinking about going through all my work in some kind of order (probably chronological) but then I thought it’d be good to start with the piece I sold my first print of. It just so happens that this took place only last weekend.

While on a three month road-trip along the east coast of Australia, I became more focused to do something with the artwork I’ve been creating for a number of years now. A friend helped me get in touch with a new gallery that was opening in Camberwell near Melbourne called “Lioli”. The name stands for Love it or leave it. It appealed to me straight away.

I sent them links to my work online and they wrote back to me to say they’d love to have some of my work as part of their opening. When I eventually returned to Melbourne, I got to the task of choosing ten pieces and getting them printed and framed. I have to at this point give a huge thank you to Tony Knight at Manark Printing who helped me immensely with this process. Tony is a very talented photographer himself and clearly has a passion for creating the very best quality of work. He taught me a lot about the process.

I delivered the final prints to the gallery, and I have to say, for a moment I felt a sense of pride. More so than I have with any of my other achievements. A few days later I attended the opening night, which was totally insane. There were so many people there, you couldn’t move. I didn’t stay very long as I was feeling the claustrophobia creep in.

Upon leaving I decided that I wouldn’t react my normal neurotic way where I’d be calling up every five minutes to see if anything had sold and then pacing around wondering why no one had called me back and all the time having a knot in my stomach. I decided to not think about it and get on with normal life. It’s not that I didn’t care, cause I did. I just didn’t want the possibility of rejection and failure to crush me. I’m still not entirely sure if this was a healthy or negative way to react.

So I got on with my life, looking for new projects to work on and dreaming up this website among other things. Then last weekend I got an email from Chris and Jackie at the gallery, stating that a lady had put the piece titled ‘JOTTPOI’ on layby and wanted to know more about it. If it meant anything and what the name stood for.

I could’ve been in trouble as a lot of my work has no pre-thought behind it and just evolves out of me looking at a photo and tinkering with it. Fortunately this particular piece did have meaning and was created for a purpose.

J.O.T.T.P.O.I. – Journey Of The Two Professors Of Imaginality

Basically the image came out of a conversation I had with a friend, Chris Daniels, about creativity and the paths we were taking. He told me about a vision that he had about these spiraling light rays and how it represented creativity. We got into a discussion and came up with a rough diagram that represented how we both journey through the creative process. How at first we are bombarded with constant external input. From experiences we have, people we meet, things we read, TV and films we watch, games we play, etc…

Over time, all of this input comes together and starts swirling around and mixing and intertwining until BOOM! It reaches a critical mass in our minds and explodes into a creative focus like a laser beam. The creative energy that is released then ripples outward in all directions, affecting all that it comes into contact with.

Almost as soon as the conversation had begun, I had visualized this image in my mind, When Chris made a rough sketch on a bit of paper it was identical to what I was seeing. As soon as he left, I jumped on the computer and set about making it into something spectacular. I set the whole thing against a backdrop of deep space with distant nebulae.

All of this took place way back in November of 2005. Since then I’ve shown quite a few people the completed image and a varied amount of interpretations, more so than any other piece I have created. “transformation from mind to body, becoming one with the divine”, “space and time with the threads of life”, “a spacial anomaly like wormhole”. For some reason, everyone likes this one and I am yet to hear any negative feedback. I wish I could say the same for all of my artwork…

I have prints of this and other works on display at the Red Bubble web site where they are also available for sale.

I hope this has given you some insight into this image. I’d love to hear any other interpretations or comments you may have.
