Proud to be White… Something to think about.

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Like everyone these days, I get overloaded by emails. A lot of them junk, some funny and occasionally some that make a strong statement. I received one of them today and feel it important enough to not only send it on to a few friends, but share it with all here.

It points out the double standards in todays society while dealing with racism. The speech is clearly about America but don’t fool yourself into thinking it’s that different here in Australia. For instance, I am an Englishman, born in London and moved here when I was thirteen. The name given to people of England by the Australians is “Pom”. Which has various meanings depending on who you listen to.

I don’t find the term particularly offensive and I believe in the true freedom of speech. This means I’m ok with anybody saying anything even if I don’t like it. However, why is it that English people can be freely referred to as Poms on the national news and other TV shows and public events and yet if I was to call a black man a nigger, all kinds of hell would break loose.

I couldn’t agree more with what Michael Richards says in the following email. If anyone takes offense then they are the true racist. I am not a racist, I leave my judgements of people based on who the individual is and the actions they do. I can hate a black, greek, asian or white person equally. But the hatred will be for the actions they have done, not because of the colour they are.

So here is the email I received, I hope you read it and understand it for what it is. And for the record I am white and I AM Proud to be, just like each and every one of us should be proud of our own heritage. For without it we would not be here.

——————–

This is great. I have been wondering about why Whites are racists, and no other race is……

Proud to be  White

Michael Richards better known as Kramer from TV’s Seinfeld does make a good point.

This was his defense speech in court after making racial comments in his comedy act. He makes some very interesting points… ?Someone finally said it. How many are actually paying attention to this?

There are African Americans, Mexican Americans, Asian Americans, Arab Americans, etc. and then there are just Americans. You pass me on the street and sneer in my direction. You call me ‘White boy,’ ‘Cracker,’ ‘Honkey,’ ‘Whitey,’ ‘Caveman’… and that’s OK..

But when I call you, Nigger, Kike, Towel head, Sand-nigger, Camel Jockey, Beaner, Gook, or Chink… You call me a racist.

You say that whites commit a lot of violence against you…. so why are the ghettos the most dangerous places to live?

You have the United Negro College Fund. You have Martin Luther King Day. You have Black History Month. You have Cesar Chavez Day. ?You have Yom Hashoah. You have Ma’uled Al-Nabi. You have the NAACP.

You have BET…. If we had WET (White Entertainment Television), we’d be racists. If we had a White Pride Day, you would call us racists. ?f we had White History Month, we’d be racists. If we had any organization for only whites to ‘advance’ OUR lives, we’d be racists.

We have a Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, a Black Chamber of Commerce, and then we just have the plain Chamber of Commerce. Wonder who pays for that??

A white woman could not be in the Miss Black American pageant, but any color can be in the Miss America pageant.

If we had a college fund that only gave white students scholarships…. You know we’d be racists.

There are over 60 openly proclaimed Black Colleges in the US… Yet if there were ‘White colleges’, that would be a racist college.

In the Million Man March, you believed that you were marching for your race and rights. If we marched for our race and rights, you would call us racists.

You are proud to be black, brown, yellow and orange, and you’re not afraid to announce it. But when we announce our white pride, you call us racists.

You rob us, carjack us, and shoot at us. But, when a white police officer shoots a black gang member or beats up a black drug dealer running from the law and posing a threat to society, you call him a racist.

I am proud…. But you call me a racist. Why is it that only whites can be racists??

There is nothing improper about this e-mail.. Let’s see which of you are proud enough to send it on. I sadly don’t think many will.  That’s why we have LOST most of OUR RIGHTS in this country. We won’t stand up for ourselves!

BE PROUD TO BE WHITE! It’s not a crime YET… but getting very close!

It is estimated that ONLY 5% of those reaching this point in this e-mail, will send it along..

So what does it all mean?

Monday, February 8th, 2010

A friend sent me a link to this video today and told me to have a look. And now I’m sharing it with you all here as I think it has not only interesting information but some important messages too.

So what DOSE it all mean?

Let me tell you…

It all means absolutely NOTHING if we can’t get our shit together!!!

Let me share a story with you of something that happened to me a few months back. I was returning home to Melbourne from a trip to Queensland. I was driving as I love to drive and, well, I’m a control freak and the thought of getting into a plane being piloted by someone I’ve never even met somewhat disturbs me and for some reason no one will let me fly a plane myself (they keep mentioning something about not having a license…)

Anyway, I decided to stop at the massive radio telescope in Parkes in New South Wales (incidentally this is where they filmed the movie ‘The Dish’) and have a look around. I got there a little before they opened, so decided to drive around and take some photos from different angles. As I started snapping away, the dish began to move in order to point in another direction and it struck me of just how massive this construction was.

Parkes Radio Telescope 211x300 So what does it all mean?

Eventually I made my way back and they had finally opened. They had built a museum and cafe next to the telescope to cater for all of the tourists. I started looking around and reading all of the information of what amazing discoveries and milestones in human history this telescope had been a part of.

Out of nowhere I felt this overwhelming emotion rising inside me. I had never felt anything like this before. As I stood reading about this piece of technology, my eyes teared up, my throat got tight and I wept. It took me a moment to realise and understand what was going on and I was taken by surprise of my own reaction.

You see, this was the first time I had ever stood in the presence of such an amazing technological achievement and had the knowledge and wisdom to understand what it meant. This mish-mash of metal and wires and tv screens, was created and put together by people, mere humans, which then allowed us to view (or listen) across the vast distances of space and explore the truly unknown. There was no Godly intervention or Alien assistance. This was made by humankind. I was truly standing next to one of the greatest human achievements, a technological achievement which at one point was at the cutting edge of science and all that we knew. Even now that the technology has been around for a while, the radio telescope is still at the forefront of exploration and our understanding of the Universe.
And yet with this symbol of all that is amazing with the human species, towering more than two hundred feet above me, I couldn’t help but feel that it all means nothing. And so I wept. I wept for our planet, the Earth, I wept for humanity and our amazing abilities and what a wondrous future we could create, and I wept for the simple fact that we are probably going to destroy both.

You see, what does it matter if we can look deep into space if the governments continue to oppress their people? What does it matter if we develop a computer more powerful than the human mind if it’s programmed by corporations that only seem content on breeding consumerism? What does it matter if we have a communications device that allows us to send masses of information around the world in less time than it takes to blink if most of the people in that world are living in poverty? What does it matter, what does any of it matter, if we can’t get our shit together and save the planet from ourselves?

NOTHING! ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!

How could any of it mean anything if we don’t have a planet to live on?

While our governments bicker and argue about what to do, while actually doing nothing, and the corporations with the power to actually do something, ignore the problem and focus on the greed of raping the world of even more resource to gain a financial profit, it is you and me and the other 6.7 Billion people (and yes that includes the leaders of those governments and corporations) who are staring death in the eye and facing total non-existence.

If we become extinct now, nothing we have created will last more than a few thousand years. In a hundred thousand years time, other than some bones in the ground, no trace of our existence will have survived, not even the pyramids. What is the point of any of it if we fall by our own hands and leave this vast Universe without a trace? We must all unite as one people of this great planet and take action to save nothing short of ourselves.

We must take action, regardless of what our governments are doing and telling us. We must take action in spite of what the mega corporations want us to do. We must take action because we want, no, we need to survive.

The hard truth about sustainability. There’s no room for profit in our future.

Monday, October 12th, 2009

Discarded Earth 300x263 The hard truth about sustainability. Theres no room for profit in our future.

So the other day, a friend of mine got asked to consult on a project for a sustainability centre. He invited me along to contribute, knowing that I’ve expressed some good ideas on the subject in the past. The meeting went well and I got to chase and catch some chickens, which is always a fun thing to do. Afterwards my brain got ticking away on some old issues that I haven’t really thought about in quite a while.

I say ‘old’ issues, because I was thinking about this stuff many years ago, even though it only now seems to be seeping into the general consciousness of society. The good thing about re-thinking old thoughts is that I can now look at them with a whole wealth of new information and understanding that I have learned since the last time I pondered them. Funny how I’ve come up with exactly the same answer as I did then. Basically, in a nut shell, we’re screwed!

As I was pondering the concept of sustainability, it hit me that while we are living in a society that worships the “profit” god, there can be no sustainability. I can already hear peoples protests out there: “But we can be sustainable and make a profit, we can recycle our water and paper and lessen our carbon output” Well that is going to help, but it’s not going to solve the problem.

Let’s take a quick look at what “sustainability” really is. At its basic level it means to conserve an ecological balance by avoiding depletion of natural resources. To take it a little bit further it means using energy that is renewable. Like wind or solar rather than fossil fuels that have a finite supply. It also means using raw materials in the things we make that are not only replaceable but also can be recycled or broken back down into base elements once discarded; like biodegradable substances.

Trees are a great example. They can be grown fairly easily and quickly and when the products they are made of, such as paper, are discarded, they break down fairly easily without any negative side effects on the environment. Unless, of course, they have been treated with something nasty, which usually they have.

By now, I’m sure that most of you are already aware of this stuff and quite possibly doing something about it like recycling your waste, conserving water and where possible using that, so called, “green energy” that all the energy suppliers like to tell us about and charge us more for. But I’m not going to go down that path. At least not today.

Ok so now that the basics are out of the way, in order for me to explain how profit, on a financial level, is working against sustainability, I first must break it all down into the very core elements. In its simplest form, what we are talking about is energy. Energy that is used to create fuels, products and stuff in general and the energy that is left over from the creation processes as well as the discarded creations at the end of the cycle.

Money is nothing more than an exchange of energy on a level that we can relate to. For example, if I were to create a painting (I wouldn’t because I can’t draw, but go with me here) it has taken up my energy to make. I give that energy a monetary value based on the time and effort put into the creation and then sell it for that price. But I also have to take into account the energy put into the raw materials that I used. Even though I didn’t create them myself, I transfered energy to the creators of the canvas and paints by paying them with money that represented the energy they had spent and so on…

I think that money is a great invention and a perfect way to represent the energy we spend working on things. However, somewhere along the line greed and corruption got into the equation (I’m guessing probably from its inception). As soon as someone decided to give their energy a monetary value plus a little bit more for profit, we were all doomed. And to understand that you need to understand one of the basic laws of physics. The law of conservation of energy which states that energy can change forms but not be created or destroyed.

The simplest way to explain this is by turning on a light switch. The electricity, surges through the element in the globe transforming into heat. Some of the heat radiates out while some of it transforms into light and so on. The energy keeps getting transformed into other forms of energy, but never disappears, although once past the light and heat stage, it is generally so watered down by other energies in the atmosphere that we are unaware of where, exactly it goes.

So with this ‘law’ in mind, if you are making a profit, which is actually a profit of energy, then where did it come from? Remember that energy can not be created or destroyed. If you have made a profit, does this then mean that you have taken more than your fair share of energy? At who’s expense? If you have extra it must then mean that someone or something has less.

I’m sure by now, some of you are catching on, but let’s continue. You may think that if someone is paying extra for something to cover the energy used plus the profit, then that is their choice and the profit is justified. That person, the “end user” is choosing to pay the price asked for and could always say no. But in today’s western society it is rarely the end user that pays for the profit. In fact the end user is usually getting the product at a heavily discounted price, much below cost price.

I’m sure you’re wondering how that is even possible. Allow me to continue. Basically there are two ways to generate a profit. The first, and simplest way, is to raise the price to the end user. But the end user these days is just as greedy as the suppliers and the manufacturers, and demands the pricing be kept low. This way the end user can stay in the ‘profit zone’ too. The other way to generate profit is to cut costs. It sounds simple enough and far less insidious than it actually is.

A product takes a certain amount of energy to create. No matter what!

A little equation I learned a long time ago is that to make something you can have any two out of three elements; TIME, QUALITY or MONEY (energy, in keeping with this article.) You can have any two but it is not possible to have all three. For example, you can make something quickly and at a high quality but it will take a lot of money or energy. Or you could make something cheap and maintain the high quality but it’s going to take a lot more time. I’ve never come across a situation that broke this rule.

Cutting costs on paper is a way to break this rule; in reality it doesn’t work that way. If, for instance, a company decides to fire some of its workforce to “cut costs” it then expects the remaining employees to pick up the slack and work harder for the same amount of money. Basically they have pushed the cost of production onto someone else and off their books. The employees that now have to work harder and longer, now put more of their own energy into creating the same product with no extra compensation.

To put it in its simplest terms, the company has stolen energy from its employees to create an excess of energy, or profit, for itself. But it doesn’t stop there.

If a company takes something from the Earth in the form of raw materials, this too is recognised as energy. To be sustainable the company involved needs to replace this energy. If for instance the company takes trees to make a product out of wood, then the company needs to replace the trees taken in order to have a zero impact. Of course a tree takes time to grow which requires an enormous amount of energy, so the company actually needs to plant a great deal more trees than it actually cuts down to maintain balance and be fully sustainable. If a company is using other raw materials it can get a lot more complicated. Some raw elements such as fossil fuels can take millions of years to create and require levels of energy beyond our comprehension.

So, in the pursuit of profit, many companies take the raw materials from the Earth without making the repayment; they steal it! So now, not only are the employees paying for the product to be made but so too is the Earth, our home. The corporate term for this process is called “Cost Externalising” and it is a socio-economic practice that is happening the world over.

Society and indeed our very planet cannot continue indefinitely, under the strains applied by the pursuit of profit. It’s time we started taking responsibility for our actions. Not only should we be paying the true price for things we must also repay an enormous debt that we and our ancestors have accumulated over the last several hundred years. When the planetary debt collectors come knocking, they wont mess around. We could very possibly end up paying the ultimate price. Complete extinction.

The sweet spot of dieting. Let the truth set you free.

Sweet Real to Fake 450x152 The sweet spot of dieting. Let the truth set you free.

I have to be perfectly honest here. I set out to write a different article to the one I am now forced to present. I had planned on writing about an epidemic that is sweeping through the western world. An epidemic of people trading their sugar filled food for something much more sinister. Aspartame, one of the more common artificial sweeteners being used today. Aspartame, more commonly known as Equal, NutraSweet, and Canderel, is used in more than 6000 products such as Diet Coke, Extra chewing gum, Weight Watchers Yoghurt, and many many more.

The article I wanted to write was to inform you of how bad Aspartame is for your health. There are plenty of people out there talking about this. Many are saying that it is a killer chemical, responsible for causing many ailments from headaches, depression and anxiety, right up to seizures, cancer, and in particular, brain tumors. I really wanted to jump on the band wagon and stick it to the man by researching the facts and presenting just how bad this chemical is for you.

However, I ran into a small problem. After hours of research, I just couldn’t find any hard evidence to back up these claims. In fact I found quite the opposite. Out of all the studies that have been conducted, there seems to be no connection between Aspartame consumption and any health issues of any kind.

Of course this doesn’t mean that Aspartame doesn’t cause health problems, only that the studies have not made the connection… Yet! Personally, when making the decision between an artificial chemical manufactured in a laboratory or the naturally grown sugar that has been used by mankind and animals since forever… I’ll always choose the naturally grown sugar. It just seems like the smarter choice.

But this has raised another issue. There seems to be so many people presenting there own personal beliefs and opinions as fact. This, of course, is nothing new, it too is a practice that has been going on since forever. Just take a look at religion and the belief in God. So many people present the concept of a God as fact, when in actuality there is absolutely no proof whatsoever that a God exists. Doesn’t mean there isn’t one, just that until there is 100% hard evidence, the existence of a God is nothing more than a theory, an idea, a belief. Not a fact!

I’m not saying that people shouldn’t say what they believe, but that they should be more careful of how they present their words. By presenting something as a fact when it is not, only weakens what could possibly be a worthy opinion. If it is found out that your so called facts are merely beliefs or opinions, you have lost your credibility. If you are fighting a potentially important cause, such as uncovering health issues related to a common ingredient in food and you loose your credibility, you have not only committed an injustice against yourself but have weakened the cause you were fighting for.

I personally believe that the truth is way more important than what I personally want the truth to be. The truth, honour and integrity can truly be a mighty sword. Wielded correctly and you can change the world. Is that a fact? No… But I truly do believe it.

Why so bland? Have we lost our soul in the naughties?

Friday, September 25th, 2009

19 imagination 450x199 Why so bland? Have we lost our soul in the naughties?

It seems that every era before now, has had its own unique sense of style, creativity and originality. In art and design, the way we dress, the music we listen to and pretty much everything else. As time has progressed the eras of style have become shorter and shorter. For the last century, each era of style has averaged only a decade in length. The 1950’s were different to the sixties which were different to the 70’s and so on. And let’s not even talk about what went wrong with the style in the 80’s (at least it was original.) The fact is that each of these era’s of style have had their own unique look, feel and sound, that are very identifiable as belonging to that particular era.

So what has gone wrong in the naughties, this first decade of the new millennium?

It seems today that everywhere you look there are old styles being rehashed. People are wearing a mix of clothes that are based on styles from at least the last five eras, possibly more. It seems that every movie at the cinema and every song in the charts is a remake of an old one. There is very little that is new.

So where has all the originality gone? Everything has become so bland, as passion, creativity and originality, seem to be fading into obscurity.

Even food hasn’t escaped the nothingness that is consuming our culture. I can’t remember the last time I tasted real bread, made by a real baker. Most of the bakeries these days get their pre-mixed bags delivered so that all they have to do is add water and bake. Basically you’re getting the same bread at almost every bakery in the country.

The supermarkets all seem to stock the same stuff. Two minute noodles, microwave pizzas, cold meats… All of them designed to have just enough flavor to be edible to people with a palette for rich foods, while not offending those who actually enjoy blandness. Designed for the biggest consumer base, instead of really working to satisfy one niche group.

It seems we have left our identities, our passion, our very souls, way back in the twentieth century.

There is, of course, a reason that this has happened. And that is the pursuit of money. Greed to be more specific. Almost everything these days has become controlled by the banker’s, the corporate CEO’s, the lawyers and the accountants. The problem is that they are telling the creatives (the artists, designers, musicians, writers, architects, food creators, etc) what to do.

So why is this a bad thing? I’m the first to admit that us artistic types, can often achieve very little of use, when left to our own devices. It’s often a good thing to have someone to manage and give direction. The problem lies with the greed factor.

These corporatey types are so scared of not making money, or worse yet, loosing it, that they no longer want to take the risk of trying new things. They want to be assured of making a profit. So they look into the past to see what worked and then tell the creatives to remake it. Surely if it worked once it’ll work again.

The thing is, it usually does. There are new generations growing up, who were not around to see the clothes or hear the music or watch the film the first time it around. To them it is new and exciting.

So what then is the problem?

Well, if we continue down this path we could eventually, just breed the artisans out of our world. The creatives would be considered those who can take something old and repackage it. There will be no room for original, passionate, free thinking expression. As I’m sure Billy Connolly would put it “We’ll be living in a beige world.”

This is a world that I for one, have no desire to be part of. If I can end with one small bit of advise, or maybe a request, to all who may read this. Find your passion, express your thoughts, seek out originality and help keep our world, one of fresh, vibrant colours.

The meaning of life… I have found the answer to true enlightenment.

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

QuestionMark 241x300 The meaning of life... I have found the answer to true enlightenment. These days, there are a great many people out there who claim to have the answers we seek, to some of the biggest questions we all ask. Why are we here? Is there life out there in space? Is there a God? Does a red car really go faster? Religious leaders, scientists, new age spiritualists, all claim to have the answers to lead us into enlightenment. But do they really?

There is a saying that I use – “If you think you have found the answer, you’ve just given up looking!” In the past, I have claimed that I have found the meaning of life, something that most of us would love to know. Many people think that if you know the meaning of life, then you have the answers to everything. I wish this were so. The meaning of life, however, is just one tiny, little thing in a great, big, eternal universe. There is still infinite knowledge to learn.

I wish I had all the answers to all the questions so that I could share them with you, but I don’t. I doubt that I ever will, or even if anyone ever will. If we were to have infinite knowledge, would we not be God’s. I for one, am not a God, other than my own. I am merely a human that has been deposited on this planet we call home. Just like all other humans, I have my fair share of faults and probably misguided beliefs.  For instance I still believe that one day someone will invent a way to lose weight overnight without any effort.  Now tell me that’s not a misguided belief.  I am only telling you this so that you realise that these pages are filled with my opinions, my theories, my ideas and my beliefs. Therefore they are subject to any faults that I may have.

What I am trying to say is that they are not, set in stone, fact. Most of my beliefs are based on my observations and understanding of the world around me. Where I venture into the realms that currently are beyond what can be known, I try to analyse the information available, with logic and reason to come to my own conclusions. What I believe, is what seems right to me. However, I always open to the possibility that someone may come along and say “well did you think of it from this point of view” and completely change my ideas and ultimately my beliefs.

If I was to tell you my beliefs, would they then become your beliefs too? As much as my ego likes that idea, I really hope that they wouldn’t. If you see anything here and think ‘Hey, he’s gotta point’ or ‘You know he may just be right’, don’t just accept it as gospel because it is a logical and plausible point of view. Look into it, mount your own investigation on the subject, expand on my ideas and then share them, so that we all may grow. The more we question things and examine them, the deeper our understanding will become.

In an interview I did with a journalist about a screenplay I had written, I said ‘A great story isn’t just written. It is evolved!’. This applies to everything, not just works of fiction. Philosophy, knowledge, understanding, science, hot dogs… If they are great then they have been evolved from a simple beginning. Nothing just happens to be great. Ideas are exactly the same, they need to be evolved.

So what of these people that really do claim to be enlightened beings that have the answers?

A truly enlightened person would not have the arrogance to claim they know the answers. In an infinite universe, there is infinite knowledge. Human beings are just an infinitesimally small creature within it, that couldn’t even begin to scratch the surface of understanding all that there is. People may have ideas, theories or beliefs about what the answers to those big questions are, but the do not know as an absolute fact. They couldn’t possibly. Of course this doesn’t mean that their ideas are wrong.

So what then, do I believe the meaning of life is?

Well I believe it is simple. Anyone who says that it is something only few people are gifted enough to understand, are just trying to control you. Either that, or they are brainwashed and just repeating what their controller has said to them.  And now the moment of truth. The answer to the most commonly asked question by all humans.  What is the meaning of life?

To learn, experience and create!

What the…! The meaning of life can be summed up in five words? Yes, I believe it is that simple. People usually think that the more complicated something is, the more likely it is to be correct. The fact is that most of the things that seem to be complicated, really aren’t, it is just a matter of how you look at it.

Now if only we could learn to get along, so that we could experience each others kindness, rather than create weapons to destroy ourselves…

Anger issues? Free yourself from the burden of repression.

Anger 450x293 Anger issues? Free yourself from the burden of repression.

There’s a lot of talk these days about anger, angry people and of course the buzzword “anger Issues”. It seems every day you turn on the TV there is another News report about someone loosing control and flying off the deep end. Why does this happen? Why does someone need to loose control in a fit of rage with violent, destructive and abusive results?

I understand anger and I understand rage. It’s something I’ve dealt with my whole life. When I was a child I had an extremely volatile temper which often resulted in screaming and slamming doors. Today it’s not something I am proud of, but at the time I didn’t know of any better way to deal with it and nor did any of the people around me.

Anger can be caused by a lot of things. Some are minor frustrations, while others stem much deeper into our psyches and are caused by things that can take a lifetime to uncover. Of course the ultimate way to free yourself from anger is to find the cause and heal it. That can be a lot harder than it seems, although is definitely a worthy cause.

But what about now? What can be done right now to deal with the anger? I for one, didn’t want to have those violent outbursts the whole time I was trying to figure out and heal what was causing them. After a series of particularly nasty outbursts back in high school, which resulted in school mates getting physically hurt, I decided something had to be done to take control.

For me, anger is a very physical emotion. When something irritates or frustrates me to the point of anger, I feel it in my stomach first. Like a boiling hot fluid that rises up through me, twisting and knotting my insides up. It can be such a build up of extreme energy that it just has to be let out some how.

The problem is that we are all told, from a young age, that anger is bad and we shouldn’t feel it. We are all told that we need to control it, and by “control” most people mean, force it down, bottle it up, hide it away and pretend you’re not angry at all. I don’t know what genius came up with that piece of wisdom, but I hope they suffered at the hands of an angry madman before dying.

Suppressing or bottling up any emotion is a bad idea. All that does is hold it in until the next dose comes along and then we hold that in too and the next one and the one after that… Then, when we are full to the brim with anger, someone may come along and do or say something that, any other time we’d dismiss, but because our anger bucket is full to busting, we explode into rage and everybody thinks we’re over-reacting to this one little thing, when in actual fact the rage is from the build up of everything.

So while I was still at school, I made a decision that would change my life for the better. It was a decision that was considered totally unacceptable within our societies structure, but I didn’t care. I decided to allow my anger it’s rightful place within my emotions. I let it out. Instead of letting it build up inside and then exploding out, whenever something irritated, frustrated or angered me, I spoke out about it right there and then. I let it be known that it irritated or frustrated or angered me. I vented.

As soon as I started doing this I felt an amazing sense of relief. To vent the anger at the moment it was created meant I was never hanging on to it. I found that to release the anger, all I had to do was verbalize it. Sometimes shout it, depending on the level of irritation. I have discovered over the years, that upon releasing the anger with each and every irritation, there is not one event that creates enough anger for me to have a physically violent reaction. No more slamming doors or punching walls or hurting other people or myself.

The best part is that the people who create the anger are the ones to receive the angry words, rather than the wrong people who don’t usually deserve it, like family or friends. This does a few different things. Firstly it tells the person straight away that they are doing something wrong to you and you wont tolerate it. More than likely they won’t do it again unless they are complete jerks. It also means that because you are not hanging onto the anger, you don’t build up a resentment about the person that caused it. This means that once the irritation has been vented, you can get on with your relationship with that person (whatever that relationship may be), or with whatever it was you were doing.

Of course there are also the health benefits of not holding onto the anger. I don’t know if there are any actually proven facts about this, but I would be very surprised if holding on to anger doesn’t have a negative effect on ones physical and mental health. I’m sure, in time, they will discover that many diseases, like cancer, may be caused by repressing emotions.

There are always going to be a lot of people in society who don’t get it, and tell you that anger is a bad thing and you just shouldn’t allow yourself to feel it. These are usually religious or spiritual people of some kind (the new age types are the worst for this.) It just isn’t realistic to expect someone to not feel anger if something is causing it. That kind of thinking just makes me angry… Arghhhhh!

Anger is not a bad thing. It is a valid emotion, just like happiness and love. We should never repress it, or any emotion. To do so, is to inevitably head for disaster. Let it out and free yourself from the burden. You may be surprised at how this one little step can affect your whole life in a positive way.

Now, who the hell do I yell at about having to pay these damn taxes….. ARRRRGGGHHHH!!!!

I am my own God, therefore I am my own reality!

Friday, September 18th, 2009

RedBlue Pill 300x300 I am my own God, therefore I am my own reality! What kind of egotistical madman would even dare to type such stuff about him or herself?  Well madman I may be, but I am far from egotistical.  Yet why else could I be writing such a title?  The answer is simple.  When you read the title ‘I am my own God, therefore I am my own reality’, in your own mind, are you hearing it as your own voice, saying it as if it was yourself that had written it, or are you hearing a pseudo-voice saying it about me, the writer?  More than likely you are hearing the pseudo-voice saying that I, the writer, am my own God.  This, however, is not how I meant it to be heard.  This is something each of us should hear as if it were about our/yourselves.

Confused yet?

Ok. Let’s break it down. So what is reality? I know, i know… Some simple light thinking right there… The dictionary claims reality is the world or the state of things as they actually exist, as opposed to an idealistic or notional idea of them. Or the state or quality of having existence or substance.

So I guess the next question would be, what actually exists? This is where things start to get a little dicey. Does the screen you’re reading this on exist? How about the chair you are sitting in or the roof above your head? What about the people you’ve met and the relationships you’ve formed, do they exist? And what about you? I’m sure that most of you will concur that all of these things, including yourselves, do actually exist.

Ok, so what about some slightly more intangible things like, colour. Does red exist? How about turquoise? At first, I’m sure you want to say of course they do. But isn’t colour just a matter of perspective? Let’s take me for instance. I am colour blind. I can see all the colours and can point out the difference between red, green and blue. But I see them differently to anyone who is not colour blind. Although I can recognise and identify something that is red, I see it differently. Therefore is red part of reality when different people see it quite differently. To you, the red that you see is part of your reality, but to me, I will never see or experience red how you see it therefore it just isn’t part of my reality and vice versa.

So if I was to ask you how you felt about the colour red, what would you say? Do you like it, do you hate it, does it give you a warm fuzzy feeling inside? I, for one, am not a fan of red. I much prefer blue or green. I would even go as far as saying that I dislike the colour. In my reality red is a nasty colour. Yes that is opinion based on an emotional response, yet my opinion is part of my reality. If you like the colour red, then you’re reality is different to mine as you would perceive it as a positive colour.

Basically what I’m getting at is that reality is dependent on how things are received by our senses, interpreted by our mind and clouded by our emotions. One could say that reality is what is left once you’ve stripped away our emotions and our interpretations of our limited senses. Would there actually be anything there? We would never know because the only way we can know things are there, is by sensing them and then interpreting them… It is a vicious cycle.

If I could not see, how could I be sure that there were actually things to see?

So if so much of what we class as reality, is up for different interpretations, does that mean that reality itself is limited to the individual perceiving it? To take it a step further, if reality is a process of interpretation by the individual, then isn’t the individual responsible for creating his or her own reality?

Do you see where I’m going with this yet?

If you are the creator of your own reality, does that then make you, your own God?

So back to one of my early questions. Does the chair that you are sitting on really exist or is it just a creation of your own reality? If I was to tell you that the chair does not exist, are you now sitting on the floor of your imaginary house, looking up at a fake sky, wondering how you got into your own head and how the hell do you get out of it?

Friends for a day or navigating the end of a relationship.

two lovers kissing 217x300 Friends for a day or navigating the end of a relationship. After attacking the social network scene yesterday, I thought it may be a good time to talk about relationships between people. Now I’m not just talking about romantic relationships, but all kinds. The dictionary describes a relationship as the way in which two or more concepts, objects, or people are connected, or the state of being connected.

I believe a relationship can be as simple as striking up a conversation with someone in an elevator to pass the minute or two before the doors open, or as complex as a forty year long marriage. Of course not all relationships are meant to be long lasting, and that’s when they break down.

Each and every connection between people serves a purpose to both parties.  No one hangs out with someone just because. When there is no longer a reason to stay connected, each person continues on their own way and the relationship is over. It’s easy to understand and accept this with a short term relationship such as the elevator scenario but what about a longer lasting relationship such as a friendship.

Well it’s just as simple really. If you and your best friend, for example, are both getting something from the relationship, weather it be someone to confide in, or someone to go out and have fun with, or whatever the reason is that you are friends, then the relationship will last and thrive. But what if life takes you down one path and your friend down another? As you both have different experiences and learn and grow, you may find that you are becoming different people (of course you’ll probably think that it’s your friend who has changed and not you…) This is what is called growing apart and it can happen with any relationship, long or short.

I think a great many people feel that to grow apart is a bad thing, when actually it’s just a natural part of life. It really is almost impossibly difficult for two people to grow as human beings at the same rate and in the same way. If, for instance, you have a lot of life experiences, yet your friend rarely does anything new or different, you may find yourself feeling that you have outgrown him or her or vise-versa. Al of this is a natural part of having relationships.

The problems begin when you go against the natural way of things and try to force a relationship when it has actually reached it’s conclusion. For some reason people feel the need to hang on to things. Maybe it’s out of a fear of change or some other deep psychological reason. Married people, for instance, quite often try and force the relationship to stay together because of a sense of commitment. Let’s face it, they promised they would stay together when they got married.

Trying to force a relationship, when it’s not meant to be, can put an enormous strain on all involved. Things will start off small, maybe you start finding something that your friend does irritating, or you realise that there’s something you never really liked about your partner. Things can only escalate from there and it wont be long before everything about them starts to annoy you. Once this happen the relationship is in a very dangerous place. It can become volatile and explode at any minute. If this happens it usually irreparable.

And yet some people still try to force it to work. No amount of will power can make a relationship work once the reason for the relationship no longer exists. The relationship is over. If you still try and persist, the universe will eventually kick in to gear and throw something at you to guarantee separation. This is never usually a good thing and can come in many forms. Health issues, accidents, or any number of other so called random acts.

The key to having good relationships is to be able to recognise early on, the reason for the relationship. Why are you friends? Why are you lovers? What draws you to that person? Why are you connected? Answer this basic question and you can recognise when the relationship is coming to an end. Of course a relationship can grow and evolve too. When one reason for having a relationship is coming to an end, you may find another reason or you may be so connected that you have a number of reasons all at once. If two people can grow together and maintain a healthy relationship, it can be a wonderful thing.

I know with my relationships, I can usually recognise when they are coming to an end. When this happens I’ll begin to pull away from the other person. I’ve found this to be the least destructive way of ending a relationship. Basically just drifting apart and never trying to force it. A number of people and friends I have done this with, have actually returned to my life at a later date and a new relationship is developed, with a new reason for being. Of course this probably isn’t going to happen if you end the relationship on bad terms. If that’s the case, there’s a good chance you’ll end up hating each other and never reconcile.

In fact some of my closest friends today are friends I allowed to drift away in the past, now that we have reconnected, our relationships are deeper and stronger than ever. It’s amazing how ending a relationship on good terms can come back to reward you in the future.

Have we forgotten how to listen?

Saturday, September 5th, 2009

People, as a whole, (and I know I’m over-generalising here) are very good at talking. We talk about anything and everything. The weather, our favorite sports and teams, how we had a good day or (more often) a bad one, and a great many other subjects. Some people keep their talking to light subjects with little meaning while others, like myself, plunge into the depths of knowledge and reason and talk about the meaning of life and how it could be better and other equally brain melting subjects, also with little meaning.

As I sit and ponder these things, I wonder, not about how meaningful the topics of conversation are, but more of who the hell is listening to all these things being said. You see for all our ability to talk and communicate and share, it seems very few of us actually have the ability to listen to other people. I wonder if it has always been this way or is it something that has progressively worsened as we are more and more ferociously, bombarded with more and more voices from every possible angle.

We can’t even go for a drive in the country without the ever-present screaming voices of billboard advertisements and road signs. Is it our attempt to shut these voices out that have lead to us shutting out the voices of those whom we should actually want to hear. Our families, our friends, those trying to help us or those offering something that we actually want.

Maybe we should all just shut the hell up for a while and allow one voice in at a time. One that we can really focus on and listen to. A voice where we actually hear every word. We may be surprised at what we all can learn from our own silence.
